Window and Door Coverings

Window and door coverings can be similar or different depending on your situation. Pay attention to how they open and what you want to accomplish, decide whether you want an inside our outside mount, and you can do almost anything you want.

Whether you are moving into a new home or remodeling an existing home, one thing that you have to include in your decision making is door and window coverings. The choice that you make in these coverings has a direct impact upon how your home looks and feels like nothing else. There are several things that you want to take into consideration when you choose these coverings to ensure that they meet both your functional needs and aesthetic desires. What should you consider before choosing your door and window coverings?
  • The function of the room. If the room is used often by children, adults, and pets, you will want to consider window and door coverings that are easy to clean and take care of. This is not as difficult as you may think with all of the material choices that are on the market now. Many window and door coverings can be cleaned simply with soap and water to keep them looking beautiful for a long time.

Another consideration is for room darkening. Doors and windows need to be covered so sleeping or TV watching can happen without disturbance. Honeycomb blinds, shades and curtains can have room darkening lining or backing to give you the function you seek.

  • The function of the window or door.
Do you want to be able to open and close the covering on the window or door or prefer a stationary covering to control the light? Do you need to be concerned about privacy in that area of the house? Both of these questions need to be considered when you are choosing the coverings for your doors and windows.

If you want to use your coverings as a way to control the amount of light that is allowed into your room or home, then you want to choose coverings that are easy to open and close. If you need privacy, then you will want to choose coverings that are thick enough to give you the privacy that you need or choose coverings that can be closed tightly for the ultimate in privacy. By considering the function of the window or door covering, you can determine what covering will fit that need or function.

Perhaps the windows and doors need to let fresh air in without losing privacy. Venetian- or mini-blinds, or honeycomb blinds with up/down functionality may be just the ticket for you.

  • The aesthetic needs of the room.
What is the decorating style of the room? If it is a formal space, then you want to choose window or door coverings that are more formal in nature, rather than casual. You want your door and window coverings to enhance the decor of the room, rather than detract from it, so be sure that you choose the coverings with the room's decor in mind.

A formal look can be achieved with puddling curtains, valances and curtain scarves for both doors and windows. An informal look can be created with wooden shutters or blinds. But these days almost any window covering style can be made formal or informal depending on the colors, fabrics, textures and combination of coverings to create the look you want.

  • Your own personal style.
Everyone has personal style, even if you do not know how to apply it to your room. Look for window or door coverings that draw your eye and cause you to have the feeling that you want for the room. It really doesn't matter if it is the "right" window covering as far as the decorating world, as long as it is the right window or door covering for you, your family, and your room.

By using these considerations when choosing your window and door coverings, you can better determine which coverings are right for your needs and your room. This can save you time and energy in your search, which can make choosing your window and door coverings less of a hassle and more enjoyable.
